Undead Army for Hordes of the Things

After seeing a game played at the club recently, I wanted to know what I could make up out of my fantasy figures.

We have seven warbands including general, a behemoth, a lurker, a sneaker and some riders.

I'm not very happy with the basing, but this was more to see what I could do.  The skellie bases are perfect for blades and not at all suitable as hordes.  Going warband seemed to be the best compromise.  If I get serious about this army I would make up sabot bases for the sneaker, lurker and the big guy.

I almost have enough dinosaurs to make up another army.  My SAGA Vikings could probably be co opted into something, and I do have a lot of flying dudes...

The problem is that the 60mm forntages are a tad challenging and more so for the other figures I have.

My aim is just to get some use out of my figures, and to have some fun of course.

First challenge was to see if the copy of the rules I have, 2.0, is up to date.  Having compared it to 2.1 it is hard to find any changes.  So that hurdle is cleared!

Reaper Ghost

I painted this figure up really quick and then stalled over how I should varnish it.  Today I thought "damn the torpedos" (my mind still being on the ACW via War Between The States) and just gave the figure a light spray with Matt Varnish.  I think a heavy spray of the varnish tends to go to gloss, but I'm still experimenting.

From memory the flesh was just white with a wash.

$4.00 from Tactics.  Good buy.

This figure will form a base for my Generic Undead HotT army that I am conjuring.  Not sure if it is a Sneaker or a Lurker.  There will be a sabot base for it so I will make two so I can do either one.  I also need to read up on the rules to find out what the difference is.

Wednesday Was Wargames

Two games of Carcassonne with my daughter when she got home from college (no pictures) and then in the evening at the NWS a game of Wings of Glory followed by an ACW HotT game.

Wings of Glory

All planes and play aids from Stephen's collection.

Stephen flew his new Albatross DIIs against mark B in a camel and myself trying out the Bristol Fighter.  A head on encounter results in a game of chicken.

The Bristol Fighter coming back into the fray having suffered jammed guns.

A collision, but with little or no damage.

Boom!  Bang!  First the Camel explodes and a short time after so does the Bristol Fighter.  What kind of ammunition was the Hun using?

ACW

I was determined this year to get some use out of my ACW collection and having enjoyed the HotT game so much last week I made up two simple armies and encourage Stephen and Simon to give it a go.  Both armies were identical: Hero General, one cavalry (riders), two artillery and six infantry (shooters).  As Simon had a blue top he got to go Union.  Stephen was the rebs and I was the umpire.

The Union were defending, but were able to make an attack on the Rebs' left which put the game at 3 to 1 in their favour.

Finally the Rebs got their main line up and after some tricky shooting got a 3 to 4 result.  End of game I thought, but I had DBA in mind.  With a 24 point army 12 points of dead enemy were required before victory could be called.

We then had some tense rounds of fighting with generals being heroically to the fore.  It looked like the Union might win as the Rebs were having a run of bad dice, but at the last minute they game good with a six when the poor Union could only muster a one.  So it goes.

An amazingly fun game!

Hordes of the Things

Well over twenty years ago I bought the HotT rules.  Last Wednesday night at the NWS I finally got a game.  My opponent was Mark B and the figures were from Simon C's collection and featured some old Minifig castings.

My dwarven bear riders take on the paladin while my behemoth (the two dudes in the horned hats, one of whom looks like they are swinging a dead cat) takes on the hero (yes, that is a scantily glad female on an armoured camel, it what it takes to be a hero I guess).

EDIT
Whoops. The joys of using a camera phone... I had taken the following photo of the battle, but it had been lost in translation from phone to email to desktop to photo editor to blogspot.  But here it is now and for obvious reasons.
My bear riders take on the Paladin while their general goes all, eh, unhairy-chested at us.

I'd already lost one rider when my guys got lucky and out rolled the paladin.  The behemoth then moved over to take out the knights who had previously taken out some of my blades.  I was learning the quick kills at this stage and had been very lucky with my placements.

At two all it is time for my magician general to do his stuff.

The army the magician had conjured up seemed to be short on armour, not to mention basic clothing.  The enemy look like inverted metallic icecream cones.  I'm not sure my shooters are going to be able to do much - best hide in the bad going.

Then there was a series of ones and twos rolled for command pips which basically saw a bit of a stand-off.  My opponent had brought over some knights from his left flank and was preparing to renew his attack.

My plan had been to attack on my left, but that had stalled.  A good command roll however had me moving hordes of skellies up on my opponent's flank.

While there was still some fighting on my left, nothing came of it (phew - the factors were not in my favour).  However on my right, the skellies caused the enemy blades to show their flank to my shooters who got lucky and shortly after my magician put in the killing blow.  Easy when you realise this is just like playing DBA.

Now my problem is I want a fantasy army of my own.  I have some figures, some partially clothed, eh painted as well.
