Imitation Legionnaires

I am sure I purchased these in England in 1986.  I was excited about the expanded Tin Solider range that I had found in a shop (which I think was Gamers in Exile in London) while on holiday in the mother country.  However, I was disappointed that they were not up to the same standard as the Tin Soldier hoplites (single pose, but also noticeable mould lines).  That disappointment has lasted for close on 40 years, but no more.  They have been painted and based to join my Seleucid army as imitation legionnaires.  The code on the base is RR2 and RR6 for the officer but I see them in the current catalogue as ITA5 Latin Infantry with the officer as ITA7 (as well as seeing a much-expanded range from the time I was actively collecting or rather accumulating them).

I got bored filing off the mould lines on the helmets.

Museum Pictura with Expansions

What a pity this beautiful game is out of print.  The many moving parts, especially with the expansions, make it a challenging game to keep across best game play.  Competiton is not directly against the other player(s) except you need to keep moving.  The sudden ending makes for some tension.  It is a quick game and not a small game, but definitely a good game.

Richard had secured two expansions and we used both of them in the game.

We both ended up with over 200 points with only a small gap between my score of 230 and his at 210.

Off to a good home

Turned out someone in my Book Club collects model kits.  I have a stockpile I thought I would be doing in my retirement, but that doesn't seem to hold the interest it once did. I want to be able to game with them I think is my issue.

You can see by the price on the Beaufighter and ME109 double how long I have had these.

I have never made an Academy kit.  It looked enticing, but I resisted. On or rather out it goes.

Stolberg Corridor - Day Eight

Day Seven AAR can be found here:

 https://onesidedminiaturewargamingdiscourse.blogspot.com/2025/04/stolberg-corridor-day-seven.html

This session came down to bloody fighting for Stolberg.  The US grimly hanging on and the Germans throwing themselves into the fray in repeated, desperate attacks.  Would they pay off?  Would the US hold Stolberg which had been seized with such optimism?

20 September 1944 was to prove to be the last day of this campaign.

As soon as it's daylight, elements of the German 12th Infantry Division attack.

Weakened, but not deterred, they attack again.

Regroup and attack, this time with 9th Panzer joining the assault.

It's a battle of attrition with both sides sustaining losses.
The US refuse to break, but pressure is being applied to their right flank
(very top left-hand corner of the image)

The attacks continue and the US forces defending Stolberg are starting to thin out.

The German 12th Infantry Division makes a massive demonstration all along the US flank.

Follow-up attacks on Stolberg take more of the city's blocks.
The Germans now hold over half.

The US make a desperate surprise counterattack.

But it fails

The situation at the end of the day.

The situation morning 21 September, the US forces have pulled back,
holding Stolberg has become untenable.

Thorakitai HB13

I don't know how long I've had these Tin Soldier figures, but it would be measured in decades.  I also couldn't decide between photos with or without flash, so presenting both.

Burgundian Ordonnance versus Hundred Years War English

Time for my Burgundians to face Dave's English.

The Burgundians out scouted the English.
Some boggy ground on the left and a wood on the right.

The English advance and the Burgundians shuffle forward a bit to get them in range.

The English get a couple of lucky shots,
but the Burgundian artillery starts to take a toll

The Burgundian artillery has the range now and blasts away.
Their longbow and crossbowmen have advanced to add fire on the flanks.

English longbow are blown away as they try and move units up to cover their flanks.

The English bravely press on.

And on, suffering all the way.

All over, the Burgundians were hardly scratched.
