Yet Even More Dark Ages Reinforcements

I am doing these more for relaxation than actual need for an army.  I am also enjoying actually getting figures off the lead mountain and ready for action.

The flag just because and four figures spare.
One good thing about Ancients is the stand basing sizes.
Good old WRG!

A mean looking bunch.

Even More Dark Age Reinforcements

Too many is not enough, more are required!

This is a real mix of figures some of whom have been painted for a while
and were just waiting for some similar types to join them.

Tin Soldier mostly DVA6 Bondi

Heading to the tabletop now.

More Dark Age reinforcements

These are very much intended to be generic Dark Age figures, but also, I just painted what felt right.

DNA6 Heavy archer form the Tin Soldier Norman Range.

DSA4 Select Fryd from their Saxon range.

Pretty sure these are Old Glory.

I was inspired by a mannequin I saw in the Army Museum in Toledo of a Visigoth knight.

More Normans

I am continuing to work on a heap of mainly Tin Soldier Dark Ages figures that I've been gifted or rescued.  I have enough to keep me busy all next year.  They do paint up fairly easily though the challenge is getting enough variety.

First up five Norman Heavy Crossbowmen DNA3 (that's what the catalogue calls them).  I've done them as crossbow armed skirmishers that will suit a few Basic Impetus armies.

Next a figure I've always liked, these ones are Norman Unarmoured Infantry DNA4.  I've based them as generic Dark Age Light Foot (FLs in Basic Impetus parlance).

Catapults

Two models, one purchased a while back and another constructed from bits.

Lithobolos

Constructed onager.  I had the base and wheels.
Matches supplied the rest with crew from Tin Soldier Univeral Soldier range

All together along with one I did decades ago,

These were a distraction after I started work on adapting siege rules from the Kingdom of Heaven boardgame for use with Basic Impetus, which I really need to get back to and finish.

Imitation Legionnaires

I am sure I purchased these in England in 1986.  I was excited about the expanded Tin Solider range that I had found in a shop (which I think was Gamers in Exile in London) while on holiday in the mother country.  However, I was disappointed that they were not up to the same standard as the Tin Soldier hoplites (single pose, but also noticeable mould lines).  That disappointment has lasted for close on 40 years, but no more.  They have been painted and based to join my Seleucid army as imitation legionnaires.  The code on the base is RR2 and RR6 for the officer but I see them in the current catalogue as ITA5 Latin Infantry with the officer as ITA7 (as well as seeing a much-expanded range from the time I was actively collecting or rather accumulating them).

I got bored filing off the mould lines on the helmets.

Thorakitai HB13

I don't know how long I've had these Tin Soldier figures, but it would be measured in decades.  I also couldn't decide between photos with or without flash, so presenting both.

Hoplites with fancy shields

Normally I hand paint shields, but after seeing what some guys at the club had done with transfers and paper, I decided to give it ago.

Not as fiddly as I feared.

And tonight they debuted on the tabletop...

Scythed Chariots

One of these I had for decades and one I've had for years.  There was a steep increase in price and I was unmotivated to do them up until now.  They were fiddly.

Back in the 1980s or maybe early 1990s a guy at the Canberra Games Society had a very nice Seleucid army that he had built using Tin Soldier figures, but doing some extra value add with detail etc.
That was where the idea for the whips came from.

Here you see the model pre whip and pre reins.
Also you can see the bases I made for each horse so I could position them better.
Positioning the horses was the major bit of fiddliness.

I went with thick wire for the reins as it was in better keeping with the models.
The whips are cotton thread coated in PVA glue.

As can be seen the scythes on the wheels are not the best.
I was tempted to add bits but decided against it.
They look mean enough.

Next step is to get them on to the table top.
