Hyboria articles that appeared in the December 1978 and January 1979 issues of Military Modelling

I saw in this post https://snv-ttm.blogspot.com/2020/07/hyboria-13.html that Tiny Tin Man was missing the Hyboria articles that appeared in the December 1978 and January 1979 issues of Military Modelling.  I knew I had these issues and was hopeful of finding them.  I did.  So I scanned them. And posted them here.

Military Modelling Magazine Index 1971 to 1976

The first installment was almost a year ago. While not so much a tedious task, it is not something to tackle in bulk and also has lots of rabbit holes to go down as well as trips down memory lane (mainly from some adverts and various articles).

I have now finished creating an index in Excel of the first six years worth of Military Modelling magazine.

I hope people find it of use.

Cheers

Tiger Tiger

Today there has been a visit to the lead mountain, but I'm not sure what the collective noun for the accumulation of plastic kit conversions that now languish in various boxes and containers.

In going through Military Modelling magazines I came across this article:

Then I thought, I did that conversion.  Do I still have it?  I was expecting to find it my spares box(es), but it was there with my other collection of Tiger Tanks (one Minitank that I'd painted up the same and three of the pre painted models you can get now a days, which includes one which is radio controlled - Dragon Armour I think).

Hand painted tools as well as transfers.
Sadly barrel is needs a 90 degree twist.

Some use of plasticard (very rare back then in Adelaide for a 14 year old).
Plenty of use of plasticine as Miliput and equivalents were also hard to get.

Don't know what happened to the Panther road wheels.
I don't think I had them and probably used something that I subsequently detested and ripped off.

The paint colour is Humbrol Khaki and probably way too dark for the yellow colour it should be, but I like it.  Some of that weathering is actual real dust and grim.

And as a supplementary, here is the Roco Minitank which I painted up to match.

Okay, so I got the numbers round the wrong way.
But look, the hatch opens!

Beautiful model, pity it wasn't to scale with Airfix kits.

Waterloo movie from 1970 - Review from Military Modelling magazine Issue No 1

Following on from my previous post, Military Modelling isse No 1 had a review of this seminal movie that so inspired me (and still does).

I can't recall if I saw the movie before or after receiving the magazine.

Military Modelling Magazine Issue No 1

I remember mum and dad bringing this magazine home for me as a present.  Not sure what I'd done to deserve it, but it had a major impact on me, that's for sure.

Sadly I dumped my collection in a teenage funk in 1973, but recovered and collected them for the next ten years.  As previously related I had the good fortune to pick up the issues I was missing and can now travel down a happy memory lane, some of which I will be posting shortly.

Military Modelling Magazine Index 1974 to 1976

This post is inspired by this post at Tiny Tin Men which contains links to indexs of various wargame related magazines.

Recently, I picked up a whole lot of old Military Modelling magazines that take me right back to my teenage years and introduction wargaming.  Having neatly put them in boxes I feared that was going to be.  Just memories that are hard to access.

Previously I had searched for an index to Military Modelling magazines, but without success.  So in the best traditions of the hobby I decided to start building one myself.

Rather than wait an eternity for me to finished and deny the good while seeking the best, I have decided to publish this first installment, covering 1974 to 1976.  I'm just missing one issue in this period and Murphy's Law states that is the one with the article you are looking for.  At least you are forewarned.

I hope that link works and that creating an Excel document allows ready access with a degree of sorting/searching capability inherent.

Feedback gratefully received.

Napoleonic Russian Dragoons Uniform details from Military Modelling August 1976

So I am working my way through my Military Modelling magazines and creating an index.  It is a nice background task and frequently I find articles that support one or more of my various painting/gaming projects that I have on the go.  When I found this one on Russian Dragoons I just knew I had to do some.  I even know a lead mountain were some suitable figures languish.

Apart from a bit of nostalgia and of course inspiration, this two page article is fairly redundant as regards information given all the other sources readily available on the Internet.  However this article does serve me as a much appreciated research item and I hate for it to be hidden away.

I am of course making no claim on this information or image and would believe that it is covered under some form of copyright somewhere, although not maybe in the country in which this article is being viewed, stored or transiting, such is the web.

What I do know is that you can no longer buy this magazine from the publisher or their "descendants" which really means if it is not to be lost it needs to be "put out there."  And anyway, I've got more important things to think about.

Napoleonic Russian Horse Artillery Uniform details from Military Modelling February 1976

This post was inspired by this post by Carlo which I came across when searching for uniform details for Mahdists.  It rang a bell that an article appeared in Military Modelling magazine on the uniforms for Napoleonic Russian Horse Artillery.  It took a bit of searching, but I found it.

If only there was a searchable index.  All this good stuff hidden away, so sad.

Military Modelling Magazine 1971-1984

If I remember correctly my mum and dad bought me the first issue of Military Modelling magazine. By the time it had arrived in Australia I was well into my first year at High School so perhaps it was a reward for doing well in a test or something.  A standing order with the local newsagent supplied the magazine from then on, rather than my academic prowess.

In 1973 in one of those embarrassing teenage fits of madness I sold my collection only to start again in 1976.  By then I was in University and old enough to regret my loss.

Forty years later and good fortune smiles upon me and I have now an almost complete collection of MM from the first issue in January 1971 to December 1984.  Only June 1976 is missing.  I don't know why that is except I have a dim recollection that there had been some disruption due to industrial action in the UK.  It was just before Maggie Thatcher's time so maybe it was the real event that propelled her to power and confrontation with the unions.

1984 was a good year for me to stop getting MM.  Nothing like a relationship breakdown to cause a bit of reassessment of one's life.

Now my challenge is to get an index so I can make use of the magazines as many of the articles are still informative, inspiring and imaginative.

The missing issue.

In acknowledging my good fortune I would like to say thank you to Bill Roberts for donating a whole lot of wargaming stuff to the NWS and to my association with the NWS.
