When is it ever not?
I thought we had played this game a few times but could find only one AAR from August 2021. https://onesidedminiaturewargamingdiscourse.blogspot.com/2021/08/europe-in-turmoil.html
We had played the sequel a few times.
An exciting game, slightly let down with the rather simple adjudication of the Great War if it breaks out.
As the Authoritarian player I found myself responsible for starting the war, but with only Germany versus the world which doesn't seem like a very Great War at all.
There are several ways to avoid the great war. Pushing an aggressive strategy that increases tension brings the inevitable failed crisis roll and outbreak of the Great War ever closer. The die roll is arbitrary, but there are various modifiers in the form of control of certain spaces, i.e. Italy, Constantinople as well as various other alliances which come in to play to reduce the difference. Ironically in our game, if the Authoritarian player had control of Vienna and Budapest, the tension level could not have gone above 3 (it was 6 when the crisis roll was made) as the Franz Ferdinand card was in effect. Lack of control of Austria Hungary also denied the Authoritarian player extra DRMs in the Great War resolution. So a bit of a double whack.
