I had high hopes for this game, both in of itself and a basis for a miniatures campaign system (there are extensions for the Successors, Pyrrhus and Spartacus - all within the scope of my collection).
Richard generously played the Persians. The game seemed decent at portraying the campaign and played quickly. The separate system for resolving battles was interesting. There had been a revision in the reprint, but it seemed flawed. Using the original system was just okay but had a few flaws too. Pity.
I have the old magazine version, along with the Xenophon and Successors add-on variants.
ReplyDeleteI always thought the Alexander version was best done solo as the Persians seemed to have things stacked against them from memory.

In our game the Alexandrian subcommanders kept dying and in the battle boxes a single weak unit could be fed into a the left, centre or right boxes and delay enemy forces. Missile troops also seemed very powerful. But it was our first game and so we might not have had the hang of things, but that said, it was a very simple system.
