Yet More Romans

I needed another unit to do justice to the Carrhae scenario I am working on.

When I was painting these I felt as if I was being a bit rough and ready, but seeing them magnified I am presently surprised.

Roman Christmas

Eh, I mean Saturnalia.

Velites - all I did with these guys was give em a wash and a rebase

Auxiliares - all my own work

My attempt at a boar

Legionaries (Hastati) - another just a wash and rebase job

When I showed these to my daughter she remarked that I had painted them in Xmas colours!

The velites and legionaries are repurposed from a DBA army, Essex figures.  The auxiliares were a rescue job (spare figures no longer required, manufacturer unknown).

A Base Full of Romans

My Roman expansion continues.  This unit has eight figures preloved to which I have added seven more.

A red wall to be proud of.
I much prefer the tighter grouping.

Second Class Republican Legionnaires from the rear.

The difference in flesh tones, shininess of helmets and tunic trim
are the exDBA figures that have been updated and rebased.

There are still a few more to go.

For a few Romans more

It's not all playing games on this blog, been also doing the hard yards in painting and basing these cute chaps.  Three, maybe more were already painted, but the rest I did.  I originally thought they were transfers on the shields, but now I see they were hand painted.  Amazing work, but I didn't trust myself to try and replicate the work.  These are a second line legion unit after all.

Parthians

These are what I kept and rebased for a Basic Impetus Parthian army from the mega load of Parthians I procured from Richard - a good example of cheque book wargaming.  The surplus went to a good home.

I've always wanted a Parthian army and back in my teens started to collect it, one figure at a time.  If I can find them they are worth a post in their own right.

On parade, just short one dedicated base of bow armed skirmishers

The big boys

Apart from rebasing I repainted the lances and also some faces,
which of course you can't see in the above image;
I wanted them wearing masks - gotta be Covid safe after all !

Four bases of factor 3 light cavalry

One base of factor 4.

These were from another purchase and were mixed in with some Cretan archers.
These ones however were in trousers which makes them ideal for Parthians!
Just need to find another three or so.

Cretan Archers

These were a supplementary part of the recent massive Roman purchase.  All I've done is rebase them for Impetus.  They have already seen table top service as part of a Parthian force, which I thought worked out well as some of these Cretans are wearing trousers which seems a more Persian and less Greek thing.

Spanish Light Cavalry

Based for Impetus (I needed two stands for the Zama project I am working on - these guys will be portraying generic Carthaginian light cavalry, but that is for another day).

My Armies of Islam for Basic Impetus 2.0

Feeling real good that I got this project finished.

There are:
  • 4 large units of FP that can be configured as spear or impetus warrior
  • 5 units of T archer which can be added to the FP spearmen to form large units
  • 5 units of medium cavalry
  • 2 units of medium camelry
  • 2 horse archers
  • 2 camel archers
  • 2 light cavalry javelin
  • 2 light camelry javelin
  • 2 skirmisher javelin
  • 3 skirmishers bow
  • 3 skirmisher sling
  • 1 general

It's rather hard to get a single complete phot that does it all justice,
but this top down view gets close.

And I do like the general figure.
Again, this was a second hand army, all I've done is some make good and rebase.
The "before"images can be found in this post:

Final Units of Arab Mounted

I could or should have said Arab Horse and Camel, but mounted fits in better with Impetus classifications, the rules I have used when creating my Arab Conquest army which actually allows me to create all the Basic Impetus 2.0 Armies of Islam forces.

These figures/units have mainly just been a rebasing and make good exercise from the purchase I made last year and received for Xmas.

Light cavalry, javelin

Whoops, I can see at least one or two of these guys should have had their eyes fixed.
Painting eyes on 15mm - who would have thought?

Medium cavalry

Camel archers
This is THE Tin Soldier camel figure.
All other figures you see on camels in the following images,
are conversions of this figure.

Camel archers are actually only in the advanced Impetus rules/lists,
but I'm not going to let that stop me from getting them on the table top some how

The man in blue was a gift from Simon.
Thanks!

Impressive and dangerous.

Those lances are really sharp.

I am stunned by the quality of the work on these figures.
Sadly I don't know who did it.

However, it's worth a question in the Facebook The Ancient & Medieval Wargamer group, although I would say the work was done thirty years ago when Tin Soldier were at the height of their popularity in in Australia.

Final Units of Arab Foot

These two units are the last of the foot figures acquired as part of my purchase last year, or was it the year before?  Whatever, they are done now.  Only have about forty cavalry/camelry figures to go and then all the purchased figures are done.  I have bought some extra figures, but that is a project for another day.

For the record the units re[resent one unit of short bow A archers (T) and one unit of short bow B skirmishers (S) for use with Impetus.

Some more units for my Arab Conquest armies

Can't believe it was April when I last added to this collection.  I am now down to the final figures of the purchase, although there is still a bit of cavalry to repair and rebase.  Here are two more units of archers and one of slingers all based for Impetus as T and S troops respectively.

The Ancient & Medieval Wargaming group on Facebook helped me identify the figures as Mike's Models.  A bit of further investigation and I would suggest the slingers are AP71 Berber slinger and the archers AP67 Arab archer.  One wag in the group suggested that the archers are wearing "the new strip for Newcastle United and will in time be Sunderlands away strip".

In doing a final edit on this post I find that my use of the term "wag" which I meant as young chap or gossip (and think I heard it in Life of Brian, but by Pontius Pilate who had problems with his r's so maybe it was "rag").  I now find it means "wives and girlfriends" which I suppose links back to the football comment.  Learning all the time (which is a quote from Benny Hill).

Expanding my Armies of Islam

Work continues rebasing and repairing and enhancing my Xmas present.

Three units of Jund medium cavalry.
All I did was repair some paint chips and rebase.
Someone had put in a lot of work modifying and replacing spears on these figures.
Very nice.

Khurasasian (I hope) - two units of light cavalry with bow.
The Tin Soldier catalogue identifies them as
DAA12 Khorosanian horse archer.
These are as bought with just a black wash applied and rebased.

And a commander.
This guy was perfect, just needed basing.

Numidian Light Cavalry

A cheap buy until I discovered they were missing their shields.  After looking at drawing pins and such, I found the head of a cleat nail to be perfect.  My other lucky break was using Jo Sonja's texture paste to secure them (as well as using it for the attaching the rider to the horse).  It dries hard, fills gaps and is sticky enough to start with to hold the pieces in place.

The other nice find was https://balagan.info/punic-war-painting-guide-numidian

The cleat nail.
