Napoleon's Battles Scenario Two - Yet Again

Why?  Because it was easy to set up and still seems to have plenty of play.  This time Stefan went French.

Deployed

The Austrians advance, their artillery proving very effective.

The game is in the balance.

Controversy for the night.

The Chasseurs on the left charged first and the Hungarians successfully formed emergency square.
The Hussards charged next but the Austrians were deemed pinned by the Chasseurs.
A check of 4th Edition rules (p46) confirmed this,
but a check of the 2nd Edition (p36) told a different story.
Originally infantry could only be pinned by an unrouted enemy infantry unit.
This changed in 4th Edition to add "or cavalry unit".

My preference has been to play with the 2nd Edition and cherry pick rules (such as self rally and self command) from the 4th Edition.  Pinning will revert to the 2nd Edition rule.

Second to last turn,
the Austrians have crumbled.

  1. Forget the rules for a moment. From a logic standpoint, does it make sense that the presence of cavalry would prevent an infantry unit from attempting to form emergency square? Usually, it is the presence of cavalry that triggers this hasty formation change. I would stick to 2nd ED.

    1. I agree. I've also posted in the group.io support for any opinions. I had hoped to produce a list of changes between the 2nd and 4th Editions, but it was a challenge too far, plus I enjoy playing with 2nd Edition and didn't need a new set of rules. That said 4th Edition does have a few good ideas.
