Bare Under Wash

Trying to work out what detail exists on some shiny metal figures is hard work.  An undercoat doesn't help much, but the addition of a black wash...

  1. A very obvious improvement. I black undercoat and dry brush in white or grey to get to the same point, but your method protects the recesses better.

    1. I normally use a black undercoat, but needed something lighter for these Austrians. I've also successfully used a dark brown undercoat (AFVs and WW2 desert infantry). The black wash started as a compromise. With some figures (notable my Byzantines) I applied it as the last step, but apart from a flesh wash, my Napoleonics don't get a wash except for special items.

  2. Looks like a classic Dave Alsop figure. Some of my favorites!

    1. Grenz infantry. There are some nice sculpts (although I've noted a bit of interference by mould lines).

    2. Yes. The first generation Old Glory figures sculpted by Alsop are great. To my eye, they have stood the test of time well despite mold degradation.
