Middle Imperial Romans versus Middle Republican Romans

Not a civil war between two opposing political systems, just a practice game as part of training for the Club's Impetuous League.  Simon's Republicans face my Republicans who are trying hard to be Imperialists.

The Republicans (easily identified in their checquerboard basing)
have been out scouted.
Thinking they were facing Byzantines, they chose Aggressive Deployment.

The heavy infantry sits tight,
but the Imperialist cavalry sweeps round on the left while their lancarii advance on the right.
However the prize goes to the Republican slingers who score a direct hit on the Imperialist archers.

The Imperialists advance.
The Republicans hide behind their skirmishers.

The Imperialists are feeling confident now they have enveloped both enemy flanks.

So confident that the Imperialist give the order for their legions to charge.
The sky darkens as the pilum fly on contact
with the Imperialists seeming to have the upper hand.

The Imperialist cavalry have suffered a major setback* on the left flank
and one of their legions has been badly roughed up.
Their general, wearing his hi-viz red cloak, is doing well
keeping his troops together by repeatedly passing cohesion tests.

But the Imperialist commander's unit is being attritted away.
On his right the Imperialist Auxlia clashed with Republican Gauls in a mutual destruction.
However the Imperialist cavalry has prevailed!

Both sides have lost their generals.
The Imperialists start to sense victory...

But they lost.

Notes:

* The Imperialist cavalry threw seven dice and failed to score a hit. You needs sixes or double fives to hit. Their opponents had only two dice, but scored one hit.  The Imperialist then threw a six for their cohesion test!  Doh!!

  1. Great looking game. Looks like the imperialists lost three units on the last turn.

    1. Yes, it was looking good till then. The right hand legion was down to its last man, but worth the risk, but the Lancarii on that flank and the archers and legion on the other flank had the advantage, but sadly not the luck.

It was good to see Simon's freshly completed cavalry unit acquit themselves well and crucially delayed my cavalry from getting into action.
