Nikephorian Byzantine versus New Kingdom Egyptian Again

Here we go again.  This time I took a cavalry heavy option and had a plan.  It almost worked and my army came second in the battle with Dave's New Kingdom Egyptians.

The Byzantines out scouted the Egyptians
and put their plan in place:
The cavalry would take on the enemy foot.

The NKE came down off the hill.

Byzantine bow fire breaks up the enemy formation
as their foot starts to swing round on the left flank.

Byzantine archery is really impedding the enemy.

Charge!
Both sides struggled to get an advantage.

First to break were the Byzantine Kataphractoi.
The NKE lost some chariots to the Varangians (far left)

The Byzantine general and his unit have been routed.
However his opposite number is on his last legs
and the one remaining Byzantine medium cavalry
is ready to charge

There is a pause in the fighting as boths sides attempt to regroup.

But the fighting is soon back on.

Things are very close

But victory eluded the Byzantines yet again
when their unit of light cavalry
was routed
(a six on a Cohesion test will do that).

The bird's eye view images give a different feel to an AAR.  Probably requires a bit more practice and I was lucky only one came out blurry (but that might been due the wailing and lamentations).  A very exciting game.

  1. By about pic 6 it was looking all up for the Byzantines... Something of a Pyrrhic victory for the New Kingdom, then?

    1. It ended up being closer than it looked at around turn 6. There were at least three combats that should have gone the Byzantines way (as in they had more dice to throw), but it was no to be.

  2. Oh well, 2nd is not so bad 😊 Those Egyptian chariots probably put the Byzantines off. A long time since they were on the battlefield.

    1. The chariots have similar factors to the Byzantine cavalry, only less manoeuvrable. But yes, not sure the Byzantines had ever faced chariots (except on the table top).
